Swallow Study - July 8, 2007
On Thursday, July 5, Victor had a swallow study at Brenner Children's Hospital in the Radiology Department. The speech therapist conducting the study mixed soy milk, water, apple juice, and soy yogurt with Barium to be able to see if Victor aspirates while eating and drinking. We had thought that the test would come back negative, because he had never had pneumonia. However, the study found that Victor is aspirating some with liquids. This means that all of Victor's drinks must be mixed with a thickener, until his low muscle tone improves in his throat. He is slowly getting use to drinking everything the consistency of honey (plain water mixed with the thickener is not his favorite). We were disapointed with this news, but we are glad he will be safer when he drinks his milk and juice. Now with the thickener, he no longer coughs everytime he drinks something--we are sure he feels more comfortable now.
